The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is carved 180 metres underground, inside a mountain of salt the Andes pushed upwards millions of years ago. It is regarded as the first wonder of Colombia, and that is not brochure talk: you understand it the moment you walk through the first tunnel and the light changes colour.
We walk the fourteen chapels of the stations of the cross, the main nave and the salt trail route, with an audio guide available in seven languages and a 3D film. Afterwards there is free time in the main square of Zipaquirá, a colonial town well worth wandering without rushing.
