Guatapé is regarded as one of the prettiest towns in Colombia, and the reason is its zócalos: the brightly painted friezes running along the base of every house, each one telling the trade or the passion of whoever lives inside. It is a town made for walking slowly, and that is exactly what we do.
We leave Medellín early and stop on the way for pan de queso, which around here is not just any breakfast. Then we take a boat across the Guatapé reservoir, past the holiday homes of Karol G, Maluma and Amparo Grisales.
Next comes the Peñol Rock. You get free time there: climb the 740 steps to the viewpoint, or stay below among the stalls at the foot of the rock. We finish in Guatapé, with time to have lunch, wander the streets and shop without rushing. We head back around 4:30 pm.
